The Fall of the USSR
The fall of the USSR represented the end of the cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The end of the soviet union was sudden and unexpected though in hindsight the series of events eventually came to a climax in 1991. Gorbachev, leader of the USSR during it's last years tried to support more diplomatic systems. He had tried to give into popular support and make more competitive elections in states for the communist equivalent of a senate. eventually the states began to separate and form independent countries. On December 25 Gorbachev resigned as president of the USSR as his power was fading away anyway. The next day the Soviet Union officially recognize that it was dissolved and recognized the other countries that had separated from the union
Here we have a large ocean liner with the USSR imprinted one it and a Soviet flag on it's mast. This represent the disillusion of the Soviet union. All around the boat are the lifeboats. Each lifeboat represent a country that was formed because of the boat sinking. This cartoon therefore showcases all the different ways of life and politics that resulted from the Soviet Union colaspe.
